Self-help is the birth and core of Jin Shin Jyutsu®. Through self-help, Jiro Murai first proved the efficiency of the Art to himself and from his self-healing, began the journey of its re-discovery. In self-help, the student receives the empowering message through experience that he or she can actually be self-sufficient. It was Mary Burmeister who, in years of study and dedication, further condensed the essence of the teachings of the Art into three simple self-help books, which are unpretentious and unassuming. It provides the student, advanced or neophyte, with the dynamic tools for self-sufficiency. These books are written from direct experience. They are not intellectual treatises and can sometimes confound the western mind with their simplicity and pensive pace. Learning Jin Shin Jyutsu we discover that it is an innate part of our natural functioning. When a child sucks his thumb or fingers, or when an individual presses his fingers to his forehead to concentrate, or when you instantly reach to hold the point of a painful injury, are a few examples of the instinctive reflexes, which make use of the Jin Shin Jyutsu concept. Jin Shin Jyutsu engages one in self-study and self-help. Through the process of "Now Know Myself," we recognize the wisdom of the body, and we learn to interpret the messages provided and utilize them to restore balance. The 5 Day Jin Shin Jyutsu Seminars

The 5 day seminar teaches the awareness of the universal energy flows that maintain our total being in harmony: how to keep the energy flow in balance through the usage of our hands as “jumper cables” whose simple application can remove blockages that keep body, mind and spirit from functioning properly.
Part 1 (3 days) The foundation, introduces the dynamic qualities of the 26 Safety Energy Locks, the Trinity Flows, the concept of depths, the Physio-philosophy of Jin Shin Jyutsu.
Part 2 (2 days) Introduces the 12 organ flows listening to the pulses, the Special Body flows and how they can contribute to harmonizing body, mind and spirit.

Anita Willoughby is a physio-philosopher who has practiced Jin Shin Jytusu for 30 years. While her family and clients are based in New York City, Anita’s ability to quickly create a relaxed learning environment in any cultural context makes her a highly sought-out teacher around the globe. Her wisdom regarding the trinity of body, mind, and spirit arises out of a lifetime of experiential, professional, and spiritual learning. Her experiences as a dancer, mother, and healer, as well as her study of the Kabbalah, provide her with a rich garden of knowledge from which she spontaneously plucks insights when adapting to the particular needs of a group of students.

Compassionate, yet frank, Anita uses her exuberant physicality and sense of humour to teach students the practical application of JSJ in daily life. Anita instils students with an expansive perspective on JSJ, presenting it not as magic bullet for fixing what's 'wrong', but as an adaptive, fluid way to approach and engage the trinity of body, mind, and spirit, throughout our ever-changing lives. Anita initially began her teaching relationship with Jin Shin Jyutsu by teaching self-help classes in NYC and working in hospital settings with people with critical labels. Some of these venues included SHARE (self-help for women and men with breast and ovarian cancer), Cancer Care Centres at both St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital, the Departments of Rheumatology at St. Vincent's Hospital and Hospital for Joint Diseases, and the Fibromyalgia Connection at Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Self-help to harmonise the MCV pathway

The Main Central Vertical Flow is the source of our life energy. This pathway runs down the centre of the front of the body and back up the spine. Harmonizing the Main Central regularly helps you feel centred and ensures that you will have plenty of energy. Some people find it calming and use it to fall asleep, while others like to use it to clear away the cobwebs upon awakening. For optimum results, do this daily.
Step 1: Place the fingers of the right hand on the top of the head (where they will remain until step 6). Place the fingers of the left hand o your forehead between your eyebrows. Hold for 2 to 5 minutes or until the pulses you feel at your fingertips synchronise with each other.
Step 2: Now move the left fingertips to the tip of the nose. Hold them there for 2 to 5 minutes, or until the pulses synchronise.
Step 3: Move the left fingertips to your sternum (centre of your chest between your breasts). Stay there for 2 to 5 minutes, or until the pulses synchronise.
Step 4: Move your fingers to the base of your sternum (centre of where your ribs start, above the stomach). Hold them there for 2 to 5 minutes, or until the pulses synchronise.
Step 5: Move your fingers to the top of your pubic bone (above the genitals, centre). Stay there for 2 to 5 minutes, or until the pulses synchronise.
Step 6: Keep your left fingertips in place and move your right fingertips to cover your coccyx (tailbone). Hold for 2 to 5 minutes or until the pulses you feel at your fingertips synchronise with each other.
Note: The right hand remains on the top of the head while the left hand moves down the body until the final step.

Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help for panic or anxiety attacks

If a panic attack is particularly strong then we suggest holding SEL 1 on the inside of the knee (see the diagram). SEL 1 is the place to hold in emergencies - keeps you BREATHING, and helps ease nausea and vomiting. Safety Energy Lock 1 is called The Prime Mover. It is found on the inside (medial side) of the knees. It connects extreme heights with extreme depths and harmonises us from head to toe because it helps the descending energy (which moves down the front) and the ascending energy (which moves up the back). If you want to change your life, hold SEL 1 every day for an hour. There is an energy site on the outside of the wrist which is SEL 17 - it came into the universe meaning Reproductive Energy (as in generating new energy). Hold SEL 17 in emergencies to balance the nervous system. It is great to alleviate anxiety and panic attacks; also good as a smelling salt if you feel faint. SEL 17 is also great instead of that Chocolate need in the middle of the afternoon when one needs a quick energy boost - it's a quick reviver! Also helps with the development of intuition, and alleviates chest congestion.
